American Black Duck, Anas rubripes: AKA Black Mallard. A wary bird that is rarely found in large flocks. At home in the beaver ponds of northern forests and east coast salt marshes, this close relative of the mallard is another favorite among hunters in the midwest and eastern states. Their subtle beauty is in their velvety plumage, intricate markings and surprising purplish speculum.
